support for union learning reps

A trade union representative proud of her status

The Trade Union Representative may also be known as a Union Learning Representative, or ULR. S/he is a nominated or elected activist focusing on the learning agenda in the workplace. Typically, they will give advice and guidance to members and answer queries about courses or learning opportunities in the workplace.

They aren’t expected to be an expert of course and ICTU will give plenty of contacts for organisations that will be able to support them in the job. They may also work with the employer to plan learning and skills programmes and promote training.

Of course, just like other union reps, no two trade union reps will do exactly the same job – it will depend on the sector, the workplace and many other variables.

What training is available?

ULR PosterICTU runs a programme of training for Trade Union Representatives starting with the basic five day course. The course is accredited with the Open College Network and covers issues such as providing advice and guidance and supporting learning needs in the workplace. Other training is being developed and future courses will look at essential skills and workforce development.

What rights do Trade Union Representatives have?

New rights were launched on 20 May 2004 which give Union Learning Reps statutory rights to paid time off to get trained and to do their job. In addition, the rights also allow members unpaid time off to consult their ULR. For more detailed information on what is covered by the legislation see www.delni.gov.uk or contact Clare Moore at ICTU.

How can my union support me?

Union Learning RepsYour union may produce materials and resources to support Trade Union Representatives . Some unions run seminars and workshops to update Reps on recent developments.
